Finding the best video camcorder can be a challenge to say the least. Recently when I went searching for the best video camcorder, I felt a bit overwhelmed with everything that is on the market right now. I looked at several models in stores from Sony, Panasonic, and Canon. I even looked at the mini camcorders, but decided that I just didn’t like any of them. All of the cameras from Sony, Panasonic and Canon looked good, and they were all small enough to fit easily with all of the other things that you need to bring along with you when you have kids. Of those three brands, Canon had the best image quality. Besides the camera being small, this was the most important to me. And of the Canon models that I looked at in stores and online, I decided to go with the Canon HF200 Camcorder. The price is currently around $850, and you can sometimes find them used or refurbished. There are three things that make the HF200 the best video camcorder in my mind, and they are video quality, features, and size.

The video quality alone could easily make this the best video camcorder out there. The camera uses a 3.89 megapixel HD CMOS image sensor to captures 1920 x 1080 High Definition video. The image sensor is similar to the one used on the EOS series digital SLR cameras. It comes with a DIGIC DV III, which is Canon’s most advanced HD image processor ever. The images are amazing, and something you have to see to believe.

The features that come with this camera are outstanding. The camera is slightly higher in price than others in its class, but this feature set is seldom seen in cameras of this class. The instant auto focus is incredible, and allows you to focus on your subject much quicker than most all other HD cameras in its class. The facial recognition software allows for proper exposure in all filming situations. The software is so intelligent that it can detect faces that are turned sideways, or upside down. You can also choose a face to be more of a main focus than others in the pic. Video Snapshot Mode is a cool feature that lets you shoot 4 second clips, and then put them together in a highlight reel. You can even edit in background music that comes on a CD in the camera box. I also love the 24p Cinema Mode. This really gives your video a “movie look” similar to how movies shot on film look. Aspiring film makers will be impressed for sure.

The size of the camera is great. This camera is easily taken on trips or to events. It can fit in a jacket pocket or purse and is easily accessable. And since the camera uses SD cards to record to, the camera is better protected should you drop it or bump into something, since there is no moving internal parts as in other cameras that use internal memory.

There are many more features of this camera that I can’t go into here. I believe that the Canon HF200 is the best video camcorder available for the money right now. I would highly recommend it for all of your video needs.
